Tips for healthy feet in summer

Written by: Monique Milne

As the weather heats up in Melbourne—especially around the beautiful bayside area—it’s the perfect time to embrace the sunshine and beach vibes. Whether you’re soaking up the sun on the sand or just enjoying the last bit of summer, it’s essential to take care of your feet. After all, they’re the ones that carry you through the day, so let’s show them some love. Here are my top tips for keeping your feet healthy all summer long.

New Shoes? Get the Right Fit for Healthy Feet

The summer sun in Melbourne is calling, and whether you’re heading to the beach or just enjoying the outdoor vibes, new shoes are often on the shopping list. But here’s the thing: when you pick up that fresh pair of shoes, how they feel straight away is crucial. You want them to fit perfectly from the get-go—no “breaking them in” needed!

I can’t stress enough how important proper shoe fit is. If your shoes are too tight or too loose, you’re looking at a world of trouble, from painful blisters to sore spots and calluses. When I see patients struggling with these issues, it’s often because their shoes weren’t quite right for their feet in the first place.

So, when you’re shopping for new shoes, take the time to really check the fit. Walk around in them, make sure you’ve got enough wiggle room for your toes, and feel for any pressure points. And if you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to come in for a podiatry assessment. I’ve helped plenty of people find their perfect fit, and it can really make a difference to your comfort and foot health in the long run.

Thongs & Open Footwear: Wear with Caution

Ah, the joys of slipping into a comfy pair of thongs or sandals during Melbourne’s warmer months. There’s something carefree about it, isn’t there? But, while thongs are great for a quick stroll to the beach or a casual day out, wearing them all day, every day, can take a toll on your feet.

Here’s the thing: excessive time spent in thongs can lead to dry, cracked heels and even pain in your arches and heels (hello, plantar fasciitis!). Plus, they offer very little in terms of support, which can lead to issues like tendon injuries and exacerbate conditions such as claw toes and hammer toes. Trust me, I’ve seen it all.

But, don’t worry, I’m not saying you need to give up your favourite footwear altogether! If you love rocking sandals and thongs, just be a little bit smarter with your choices. Look for pairs that come with arch support and an enclosed heel counter. A shoe with these features can offer far better support and comfort for your feet—so you can keep enjoying the summer sunshine without the consequences.

Keep Barefoot Walking to a Minimum

There’s something liberating about walking barefoot, especially during those sunny days when the grass is soft, or the sand feels warm underfoot. But while it might feel good, barefoot walking isn’t always the best choice for your feet—especially in certain environments.

In Melbourne, with all the lovely outdoor spots like beaches and pools, it’s easy to slip off your shoes and go for a barefoot wander. However, keep in mind that fungi and bacteria thrive in warm, damp areas—think poolside or the beach—and can lead to conditions like warts or tinea (fungal infections). And let’s not forget, you might end up stepping on something sharp like glass or a nasty splinter.

For those of you with diabetes, going barefoot is even riskier. I’ve worked with many patients who’ve faced serious complications from unnoticed cuts or wounds that started from a simple barefoot walk. If you have diabetes, I always recommend wearing protective footwear and checking your feet daily for any signs of injury.

If you enjoy barefoot moments, just be mindful of where and how often you go without shoes. Your feet will thank you for it!

Don’t Forget the Sunscreen on Your Feet

It’s easy to remember sunscreen on your face, arms, and shoulders, but what about your feet? They’re often neglected when it comes to sun protection, and trust me, they need it just as much as the rest of your body. We’ve all heard about skin cancers, and yes—your feet are at risk too!

Melbourne’s summer sun can be pretty harsh, and the skin on your feet is just as vulnerable to harmful UV rays. I’ve seen a fair share of foot-related sunburns, and let me tell you, it’s not pretty. And it’s not just about sunburn either. Skin cancers can show up on the feet, especially since we tend to forget to apply sunscreen there.

So, next time you’re lathering up with SPF, don’t leave your feet out in the cold. Apply sunscreen to the tops and soles of your feet, paying attention to areas like your toes and the top of your arches. It’s a simple step that can make a huge difference in protecting your skin and keeping your feet healthy.
